Nursing management of postpartum depression among new mothers

Abstract

Postpartum depression is a significant public health concern that affects women during the postnatal period and has profound implications for maternal wellbeing, infant development, family relationships, and overall quality of life. It is characterized by persistent sadness, anxiety, emotional instability, fatigue, feelings of guilt, sleep disturbances, and impaired maternal functioning. Unlike transient postpartum blues, postpartum depression is a more severe and prolonged psychological condition that requires timely identification and intervention. Current evidence suggests that approximately 10%–20% of women worldwide experience postpartum depression, with higher prevalence rates reported in low- and middle-income countries due to limited healthcare access, social stigma, and inadequate support systems. Nursing professionals are uniquely positioned to address this condition through early screening, therapeutic communication, psychosocial support, education, counseling, and referral coordination. This article explores the epidemiology, etiology, risk factors, clinical manifestations, assessment tools, and evidence-based nursing management strategies for postpartum depression among new mothers. It further emphasizes the significance of nurse-led interventions, family-centered care, home-based follow-up, and telehealth approaches in promoting maternal mental health recovery.
