Abstract

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) and kidney failure significantly affect the physical and psychological well-being of patients undergoing hemodialysis, with sleep disturbance being one of the most common complications due to uremia and associated metabolic changes. This study aimed to assess the effect of acupressure on the quality of sleep among chronic kidney disease patients receiving hemodialysis. A quantitative research approach with an experimental design was adopted. A total of 60 patients were randomly assigned into experimental and control groups. The Pittsburgh Insomnia Rating Scale-20 (PIRS-20) was used to measure insomnia levels before and after the intervention. In the experimental group, pre-test findings showed that 43.33% of patients had moderate insomnia and 36.67% had severe insomnia. Following acupressure intervention on P6 and K1 acupoints, the majority of patients demonstrated mild insomnia during post-test assessment, and no patient reported severe insomnia. The difference in mean pre-test and post-test insomnia scores was statistically highly significant (p = 0.001). In the control group, 53.33% had moderate insomnia during pre-test, and 56.67% remained in the same category during post-test, with only slight improvement (p = 0.012). The findings conclude that acupressure is an effective, non-pharmacological intervention for improving sleep quality among chronic kidney disease patients undergoing hemodialysis.
