Abstract

Breastfeeding is a natural, safe, and cost-effective method of infant feeding that provides complete nutrition and immunological protection to newborns. Early Initiation of Breastfeeding (EIBF), defined as initiating breastfeeding within one hour after birth, plays a crucial role in improving neonatal survival, strengthening maternal–infant bonding, and promoting long-term breastfeeding success. Despite recommendations by the World Health Organization and UNICEF, delayed initiation of breastfeeding remains a significant public health concern, particularly in developing countries. This review article examines the effectiveness of breastfeeding education on timely initiation of breastfeeding among postpartum mothers. The review discusses the physiology of lactation, importance of colostrum feeding, maternal and neonatal benefits of EIBF, and factors influencing breastfeeding practices. It also highlights various educational interventions including antenatal counselling, postnatal teaching, peer support, family-centred counselling, and digital breastfeeding education. The role of nurses, healthcare professionals, and the Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI) in promoting breastfeeding practices is emphasized. Additionally, barriers such as lack of trained staff, cultural myths, language barriers, and caesarean delivery complications are explored. Evidence from the reviewed literature suggests that structured breastfeeding education significantly improves maternal knowledge, confidence, early initiation rates, and exclusive breastfeeding practices. Strengthening breastfeeding education and support systems can contribute substantially to improved maternal and neonatal health outcomes
