Instagram’s algorithm shapes content consumption andengagement among teenagers
Abstract
This paper examines how Instagram’s content recommendation algorithm influences the media consumption habits, engagement behaviors, and overall well-being of teenagers. Adolescents between the ages of 13 and 19 represent one of the platform’s most active user groups, yet remain underexplored in terms of algorithmic impact. Drawing on a mixed-method approach that combines a quantitative survey (n=1,000) with qualitative interviews, the study offers a detailed look at how young users interact with algorithmically curated content. Findings show that roughly 72% of surveyed teens spend more than two hours on Instagram every day, while close to 80% report that most of the content they encounter is driven by algorithmic recommendations, particularly through the Explore page. The content categories teens engage with most include Entertainment and Reels (27.1%), Educational content (23.7%), Fitness and Wellness (18.6%), Fashion and Beauty (16.9%), and News and Politics (13.6%). While many participants noted benefits such as creative inspiration, a sense of community, and greater awareness of social issues, the study also highlights significant concerns. These include compulsive usage patterns tied to dopaminedriven feedback loops, anxiety caused by social comparison, declining academic performance, and algorithmic amplification of harmful or misogynistic content. A particularly concerning finding is the echo chamber effect, whereby repetitive exposure to similar content progressively narrows the informational and social worlds of young users. These results are interpreted through the lens of existing research on adolescent brain development, sensitivity to peer influence, and the ethical responsibilities of social media platforms. The paper concludes with practical recommendations for parents, educators, platform developers, and policymakers.
