Abstract

Traffic management in India has not become easier over last few years due to rapidly increases in population, urban growth and rapid increase of vehicles on the road. The problems such as traffic congestion, road accidents and pollution are appearing everywhere due to increased size and congestion in urban areas. Road infrastructure, lane discipline and mixed traffic are the reasons for difficult to control and forecast the traffic more complex than many other countries. The present study aims at collection of significant traffic problems and their causes along with the severity levels of respective traffic problems in Indian cities. It further aims at studying the role of modern technologies such as Artificial Intelligence, IoT, smart sensors, GPS, traffic lights, etc. in traffic planning and management to resolve the traffic problems and achieve sustainability of transport systems and safety of roads by controlling traffic congestion and accidents. With increasing air pollution and emission of carbon, managing traffic on a sustainable basis has become a top priority at the national level. The objective of the present investigation is to suggest feasible, scalable and cost friendly solutions using digital media and real time data analysis based on the varied conditions prevailing in India.
