Abstract

Digital platforms provide useful resources for academic learning, but recommendation systems and mixed-content platforms can also expose students to distracting material during study sessions. Conventional productivity tools commonly rely on static domain blocklists or application timers, which may be ineffective when educational and non-academic content are available within the same platform. This paper presents Project VOID, a desktop-based focus enforcement system designed to reduce such distractions through contextual content filtering and controlled study sessions. The proposed system uses Direct Query Processing to preserve user search queries and a Real-Time Metadata Heuristic Scanner to examine metadata obtained from search or application interfaces. Relevant metadata is evaluated using heuristic rules to distinguish academic content from predefined categories of distracting content. In addition, the VOID Vault provides a controlled session environment by restricting selected system-level interactions during an active focus session. Administrative authentication is used to protect configuration settings and prevent unauthorized changes during a session. The proposed architecture is intended to provide a lightweight approach to contextual distraction filtering without depending on continuously maintained domain blocklists. A prototype implementation is presented, with future evaluation planned to measure filtering accuracy, processing latency, system overhead, and effectiveness in reducing context switching during academic tasks.
